“Banking Malware Infects Millions of Android Apps”

Android users are facing a critical situation as numerous apps have been discovered to be distributing dangerous banking malware. These apps, which have been downloaded millions of times, were all found on the Google Play Store, facilitating their widespread infection of smartphones.

The Zscaler ThreatLabs team was the first to identify the threat, highlighting that many of the compromised apps contain the harmful Anatsa bug. This malware, known since 2020, is capable of stealing credentials, logging keystrokes, and enabling fraudulent transactions.

What makes this malware attack particularly alarming is its deceptive method of infiltration. Anatsa uses a dropper technique, where a benign-looking decoy app on the official Google Play Store conceals the actual malicious payload. By downloading this payload from a command-and-control server as a fake update, Anatsa evades detection mechanisms, making it challenging to detect.

In addition to Anatsa, other malware attacks have been observed. ThreatLabz reported 77 malicious applications, including the Joker bug, to Google. The Joker bug can perform various malicious activities like reading and sending text messages, taking screenshots, making calls, stealing contact lists, and subscribing users to premium services without their knowledge.

Zscaler emphasized the importance of scrutinizing application permissions and ensuring they align with the app’s intended functionality before installation. This advice underscores the significance of researching developers and checking reviews before downloading any software on mobile devices.

Activating Google Play Protect is another preventive measure recommended to users. This service monitors apps and devices for harmful behavior, conducts safety checks on apps before download, and alerts about potentially harmful applications. It can even remove or deactivate harmful apps from devices, enhancing the overall security of Android devices.
