Dramatic video footage has captured a frightening incident where a cliffside in Dorset collapsed, prompting people to flee in fear as a large dust cloud billowed out from the impact. The Dorset Council shared the shocking video on social media, depicting the cliff crumbling down while onlookers observed from the beach at West Bay on the Jurassic Coast. The collapse occurred around 4 pm, causing the cliff face to disintegrate rapidly and crash onto the beach below, leading to a panicked reaction from three individuals nearby.
Described as a “rockfall” by the council, the event resulted in the closure of the local path atop the cliff. An urgent warning was issued by the council for individuals planning to visit the beach. Despite the rockfall, the beach, famous for its association with the TV series Broadchurch, remained open. However, the council cautioned the public about the potential for similar incidents in the future.
The council emphasized that the cliff path remained off-limits while reminding beachgoers about the constant risk of rockfalls and landslides. Safety precautions, such as heeding warning signs, sticking to established paths, and avoiding cliff edges, were stressed. Following the report of the cliff fall, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency dispatched a rescue team to the area, but fortunately, no distress calls were received.
Rockfall occurrences are frequent in West Bay due to the sandstone composition of the Dorset cliffs, making them susceptible to erosion. Typically triggered by severe weather conditions like heavy rainfall, preventive measures are in place to ensure the safety of individuals from the hazardous cliff movements. A visitor to Dorset expressed gratitude that no injuries were reported during the incident, describing it as a miraculous outcome.
Suzanne Sears, a tourist from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, recounted her experience near the cliff during the rockfall. She mentioned hearing a deep cracking sound before witnessing the cliff collapse, creating a debris pile and a dust cloud. Sears commended the swift response of local authorities, noting their prompt arrival within 10 minutes of the incident.
