The boxing community is in mourning following the tragic passing of 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior. Hailing from Belfast, McCullagh had a successful amateur career, securing the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and representing Ireland in international competition against the Netherlands.
With a professional record of two wins, McCullagh, also known as ‘The Irish Drago’, fought for both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.
He was the grandson of the esteemed Belfast boxing coach Paul McCullagh, who trained renowned boxers like Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell during his career. McCullagh’s father, also named Paul, is a professional referee and a former champion amateur boxer.
The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) expressed deep sorrow over McCullagh’s untimely death, highlighting his accomplishments in the ring and sending condolences to his family, club, and loved ones.
Former teammate Aidan Walsh and trainer Jonathan O’Brien shared heartfelt tributes, remembering McCullagh fondly. The Belfast boxing community also paid respects, acknowledging McCullagh’s contribution and offering condolences to his family and friends.
