Britain is set to face heavy snow showers today with temperatures dropping to as low as -10C, marking the beginning of a prolonged cold spell, according to the latest forecasts from the Met Office.
The start of the new year has brought subzero conditions across the country, with the first snowfall occurring last night and a series of weather alerts issued for the upcoming four days.
Warnings for snow and ice, covering all regions of the United Kingdom, including two amber alerts in effect today, are expected to remain active until midday on Monday, with the cold weather forecasted to persist through most of the following week.
The sudden drop in temperatures is attributed to Arctic air moving in, as stated by Met Office forecasters, resulting in an extended period of cold conditions with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing in various areas, even during daylight hours.
Rebekah Hicks, the Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, mentioned, “The UK is experiencing Arctic air and brisk northerly winds as we enter the New Year.”
Hicks added, “Snow and ice warnings are active for many regions, with a likelihood of heavy snow showers, particularly in northern Scotland and elevated areas elsewhere, while many inland areas will remain predominantly clear and sunny.”
The cold conditions are expected to persist over the weekend and into the following week, with daytime temperatures struggling to reach above freezing in some places and nighttime temperatures dropping to minus double digits in certain areas.
It is advised to stay informed about the weather, keep up with the forecasts, and plan ahead due to the likelihood of icy roads and slippery surfaces.
According to a weather radar map from WXCharts, temperatures are anticipated to plummet to -10C in parts of Scotland on Monday evening, with below-freezing conditions expected throughout the country, even in southern England.
Over the next 48 hours, snow is predicted to accumulate in northern and central regions, accompanied by widespread ice that increases the risk of travel disruptions over the weekend and into the following week.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber cold health alerts for England until January 6, anticipating an increase in weather-related health issues that could further burden the NHS during winter.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, the Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals as the cold weather can significantly impact health, especially for those above 65 and individuals with existing health conditions.
