“Scottish Teen in Qatari Prison: Drug Smuggling Or Criminal Coercion?”

A teenager from Scotland, Lino Neil, found himself spending Christmas in a Qatari prison, separated from his worried mother. Lino, known for his fishing skills, was detained for allegedly carrying a suitcase filled with cannabis from Thailand to Dublin, but was apprehended in Doha. His family from Drymen, near Stirling, shared how Lino called home in a state of panic upon realizing the severity of his situation.

The surge in drug mules from Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries has raised concerns, as highlighted by Beki Wright, head of the National Crime Agency’s Borders Threat Team. Criminal gangs are enticing young Brits with promises of luxurious holidays in exchange for transporting illicit packages.

Lino’s mother, Nicola, expressed her distress over her son’s predicament, believing he was manipulated by criminals. She emphasized his vulnerability as a teenager without connections in Thailand to engage in drug deals. The family is facing substantial legal expenses for Lino’s trial in Doha and has already incurred costs for legal representation.

Nicola revealed the toll her son’s situation has taken on her mental health, expressing her desperation for his return. Lino is scheduled to appear in court on January 27, where he plans to argue that he was coerced into carrying the drugs by a British expatriate. His brother, Robbie, recounted the events leading to Lino’s arrest and emphasized his innocence in drug-related activities.

Robbie detailed the harrowing experience Lino faced in Qatari prisons and expressed relief when Lino was moved to a smaller cell with fewer inmates. He dismissed the notion that Lino would be involved in orchestrating drug deals, emphasizing his brother’s passion for fishing. The family’s primary focus remains on bringing Lino back home safely.
