“Check Backpacks: Heavy Bags Putting Kids’ Health at Risk”

Parents are being urged to inspect their children’s backpacks before they head off to school, focusing not on the contents but rather on the weight inside. Chiropractor and member of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), Dean Blackstock, has highlighted to Marks and Spencer that many children are carrying excessive weight in their bags, potentially leading to health issues.

Carrying a heavy backpack can result in back pain, according to children’s health experts, who recommend that a backpack should not exceed 10% of a child’s body weight. Mr. Blackstock emphasized the importance of adhering to this weight limit for the sake of spinal health, growth, and development.

He explained that overloading backpacks can strain growing spines, muscles, and joints, leading to issues like poor posture, discomfort, and long-term musculoskeletal problems. Children often adjust their posture to compensate for heavy bags, which can cause imbalances and increase the risk of fatigue or injury over time.

As children grow at different rates and have varying weights, it is advised to calculate the maximum allowable weight for each child by multiplying their weight by 0.1. Parents should regularly monitor and adjust the contents of the backpack to ensure it stays within the recommended weight limit.

Proper packing techniques, such as distributing weight evenly and placing heavier items at the top, along with wearing the backpack as designed, can help alleviate pressure on the body. Mr. Blackstock stressed the importance of wearing the backpack on both shoulders and adjusting the straps correctly to provide adequate support and reduce strain on the body.

Making simple adjustments to how children carry their school bags can significantly impact their long-term musculoskeletal health, emphasizing the importance of proper backpack weight and wearing practices.
