“Maduro Arrested in NY, Venezuela in Turmoil”

Nicolas Maduro was taken into custody by heavily armed Federal agents and escorted to a New York court today following his capture by US forces. The former Venezuelan leader asserted his position as the “president of my country” as he contested his arrest and pleaded not guilty to federal drug trafficking charges. Meanwhile, back in Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, his deputy, was sworn in as Acting President amidst the ongoing political upheaval triggered by Donald Trump.

Maduro’s court appearance, his first since being removed from his residence and transported to the US, occurred amidst tight security measures and widespread protests in the city and globally. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the urgent need for Venezuela to transition peacefully to democracy, labeling Maduro as “illegitimate.” Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the significance of upholding international law in discussions with US counterpart Marco Rubio following Trump’s involvement in Venezuelan affairs.

In a show of solidarity, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside Downing Street, demanding the release of Nicolas Maduro. Chants for “free Maduro” resonated as political figures like Jeremy Corbyn and Richard Burgon addressed the crowd, with some individuals symbolically denouncing the US by stomping on and tearing apart an American flag.

The ousted Venezuelan president was transported from a helicopter to a secured vehicle before appearing at a federal courthouse in Manhattan. Supporters of Maduro congregated around the court premises, expressing their backing for the former leader. Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores, was apprehended from their residence in Caracas over the weekend and subsequently faced drug trafficking charges in court.

As the political saga unfolded, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez assumed the role of Acting President in Venezuela. The scene outside the courthouse witnessed a school bus passing by amidst the unfolding events, drawing attention to the extraordinary political turmoil. Notable figures like Peter Tatchell and Jeremy Corbyn participated in the ‘Hands off Venezuela’ protest in London, denouncing the actions against Maduro. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz characterized Maduro’s capture as a “surgical law enforcement operation” during a Security Council meeting.
