The UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House in June was deemed a success by TKO officials, but the financial outcome paints a different picture. TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, disclosed spending approximately $60 million US on production costs for the event on June 14, which was one of the most anticipated fight cards in recent UFC history. However, during the company’s earnings call, chief financial officer Andrew Schleimer acknowledged a loss of around $30 million incurred from the grand spectacle, which commemorated the United States’ 250th birthday and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
Schleimer informed investors during the Q2 earnings call that the company faced higher-than-normal costs, partially offset by sold-out global partnerships inventory. The absence of ticket sales resulted in no live events revenue recorded. The financial impact of the event, as expected, led to a loss of approximately $30 million, significantly affecting UFC’s margins on a consolidated basis.
The MMA event attracted over 34 million viewers worldwide and showcased a seven-fight card where every bout ended by knockout or technical knockout, a first in UFC history. Fourteen top fighters competed in the cage fight set up on the White House’s South Lawn, in front of an audience of about 4,300 attendees, including members of Congress, business leaders, military personnel, and Trump administration officials. The White House promoted it as a “once-in-a-generation celebration of the American fighting spirit.”
Despite the financial setback, TKO’s CEO, Ari Emanuel, expressed satisfaction with the event during the earnings call, highlighting the exposure, media coverage, audience growth, and fan engagement it generated. Other executives, including TKO’s COO Mark Shapiro, lauded the event for producing over $1 billion in earned media value and strengthening commercial partnerships.
While TKO executives praised the event’s success, UFC President and CEO Dana White stated that due to the exorbitant cost, there are no plans to hold a similar event at the White House in the future, despite it being an unforgettable experience for all involved.
