A prosecutor stated that a former street gang leader masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for his nephew’s beating. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a murder charge in Clark County, Nevada, for allegedly leading a group of individuals to carry out the fatal shooting of Shakur near the Las Vegas Strip. The prosecutor told jurors that Davis ensured the shooters were prepared for the assault and revealed details of the plan himself, as per recent public statements by Davis.
In response, defense lawyer Michael Sanft argued that after 30 years, there is scant evidence to validate the accusations against Davis, labeling his statements as unreliable and unverifiable. The killing of Shakur exacerbated the perception of violence within hip-hop culture, particularly during the era of “gangsta” rap, intensifying the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry.
Authorities identified Davis as the orchestrator of a swift scheme to avenge his nephew’s assault by Shakur and his associates at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas on the night of September 7, 1996. The conflict reportedly stemmed from animosity between two Los Angeles-based street gangs, the South Side Compton Crips led by Davis and Mob Piru linked to Marion (Suge) Knight and Death Row Records. The incident occurred during a visit to witness a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon.
Davis allegedly procured the murder weapon and passed it to two accomplices in a white Cadillac, leading to the fatal encounter with Knight and Shakur’s vehicle. Shakur sustained fatal injuries, succumbing to the gunshot wounds six days later, while Knight endured minor harm. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, may include testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, who was present during the shooting and is currently serving a prison sentence for an unrelated offense.
Davis’s self-incriminating statements in 2018 reignited the investigation, prompting his arrest in 2023. Despite Davis’s admissions, the actual gunman remains undisclosed. With the other individuals in the Cadillac deceased, Davis faces murder charges under Nevada law for his role in the crime. The unresolved murder of rapper Christopher Wallace, also known as the Notorious B.I.G., is often linked to Shakur’s assassination, forming a complex narrative in the history of hip-hop.
