Conservationist Mark Thomas recently shared insights in an interview about efforts to preserve a rare bird species in the United Kingdom. The success in safeguarding the Montagu’s harrier population in Britain can be largely credited to the remarkable breeding capabilities of a male bird known as AU. This 10-year-old bird has fathered a total of 16 offspring, with 10 offspring born in the last two years alone, earning him the reputation of being “absolutely prolific.”
Thomas, who leads the species conservation efforts at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), emphasized AU’s crucial role in sustaining the species in the UK. Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe after wintering in Africa and parts of Asia. Despite being globally listed as a species of least concern, the UK population of these birds has faced significant declines over the years.
The number of breeding pairs in the UK reached a peak of around 30 in the 1950s, dropped to zero in the 1970s, and fluctuated over the years. AU’s recent success in raising chicks has been a significant boost to the population. His acrobatic mating displays and successful breeding with multiple females have led to the birth of six new chicks this year, with hopes that his offspring will contribute to the species’ future in the UK.
Conservationists are closely monitoring the new hatchlings, which are being protected in two separate nests located on a British farm. The exact locations of these nests are kept confidential to safeguard the chicks from predators. Furthermore, the RSPB has attached satellite trackers to two juvenile harriers for the first time, enabling researchers to track their migration patterns and potential return to the UK for breeding.
Thomas expressed optimism about the future of the Montagu’s harrier population in the UK, emphasizing the importance of ongoing conservation efforts in collaboration with farmers and the community.
