Renowned romance writer Carley Fortune has revealed the upcoming launch of her sixth book, “Only in Summer,” scheduled for release on May 18, 2027. This new novel revisits Barry’s Bay, Ont., the familiar backdrop of Fortune’s earlier works such as “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” as well as her hometown.
In a recent newsletter, Fortune shared that she acquired a lakeside cottage near Barry’s Bay just before commencing the writing process. She expressed her long-held aspiration of owning a cottage following the sale of her family’s lakeside residence.
The protagonist of “Only in Summer” is Eleanor Florek, also known as Ellie, who shares Ellie is the cousin of Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s previous Barry’s Bay tales. Ellie, who grew up in Barry’s Bay, harbored a desire to purchase property there. However, upon accumulating sufficient funds to fulfill her dream, Ellie discovers that a neighboring house is being demolished to make way for a grand mansion, leading to unexpected developments.
While details beyond this are scant, it can be anticipated that a hesitant romance will blossom against the picturesque lakeside backdrop. Carley Fortune, a writer and journalist based in Toronto, previously edited for esteemed publications such as Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life. Her earlier literary works include “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.”
“Meet Me at the Lake” was a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024, championed by fashion content creator and model Mirian Njoh, marking the first romance novel to feature on the show. “Every Summer After” was adapted into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” which recently premiered and was renewed for a second season based on “One Golden Summer.” Additionally, Netflix Canada is set to transform “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode series.
