Cold weather payments have been activated by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in an additional 10 postal code areas in England and Wales, bringing the total number of eligible regions to 451, where individuals can receive £25 payouts.
As the UK experiences a cold spell, multiple amber and yellow weather alerts for snow and ice have been issued nationwide.
In England and Wales, Cold Weather Payments are disbursed to individuals receiving various benefits when temperatures are forecasted to drop below zero for seven consecutive days. In Northern Ireland, a similar scheme operates, while in Scotland, heating bill support is provided annually, unrelated to specific cold spells.
The DWP has confirmed that 10 more postal codes were triggered on January 3 for the payments. If you reside in an affected area, you may receive the £25 payment in your bank account within days, as payments are usually processed within 14 working days of activation without needing an application.
Pensions Minister Torsten Bell emphasized the automatic support provided by Cold Weather Payments to vulnerable households during temperature drops. He highlighted ongoing efforts such as the Pension Credit uptake campaign and the Triple Lock commitment, which aims to raise the State Pension by up to £2,100 over the current Parliament to ensure adequate support for pensioners during winter.
