The video featured grizzly bear No. 142, a familiar female bear, peacefully walking along Taylor Lake trail in Banff National Park. The woman who filmed the incident is set to appear in court in Canmore later this month.
A recently published peer-reviewed study, “The Canine Conundrum: Is a Dog a Help or Hindrance in Bear Country?” examined 326 documented human-bear conflicts involving dogs from 1901 to 2023. The study revealed that 54% of these conflicts were instigated by dogs, resulting in five human fatalities, 56 dog fatalities, and 170 human injuries.
Lana Ciarniello, a co-author of the study, highlighted that hiking in a group reduces the likelihood of negative bear encounters by 50%. However, the presence of dogs escalates the risk of conflict, introducing chaos into recreational activities.

The research suggested that carrying a deterrent, leashing dogs, and hiking in groups significantly lower the risk of bear encounters. Ciarniello advocated for adherence to on-leash dog regulations in Canada’s national parks and proposed exploring dog restrictions in critical grizzly habitat areas.
Parks Canada wildlife experts recommended implementing “enhanced dog restrictions” across Banff National Park following the fatal incident in Red Deer Valley. The internal report highlighted the importance of revising dog-related policies to mitigate risks associated with human-bear interactions.
Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety & More, advised dog owners to assess their pets’ behavior around wildlife before bringing them into carnivore habitats. If encountering a bear, Titchener recommended stepping off the trail, carrying bear spray, leashing dogs, and prioritizing safety over filming the encounter.
