“Beloved Family-Operated Art Store to Close After 40 Years”

Customers were left saddened by the recent announcement of the permanent closure of a family-operated art and stationary store.

Clarkes of Sussex took to social media to inform the public that it will be closing its Burgess Hill store in West Sussex, a decision made after over four decades of operation.

While an exact closing date in April is yet to be disclosed, the store has already started to receive messages from its loyal clientele.

Expressing their sentiments, one shopper remarked, “Your shop will be greatly missed. It has always been a pleasure to visit.” Another customer added, “This news is truly disheartening.”

Another patron shared, “I have been a customer for many years, and your team has consistently been helpful, respectful, and kind.” A fourth individual commented, “I am truly saddened by this news – your store and staff are wonderful.”

Last year, Clarkes of Sussex closed its Brighton outlet after trading for 25 years, although it still maintains stores in various locations across Sussex, including Haywards Heath.

Additionally, Clarkes in Lewes, under different ownership, is set to close in March.

Jay Patel, the owner of Clarkes of Sussex, shared a message on social media detailing the closure of the Burgess Hill store. Patel expressed mixed emotions stating, “After serving this wonderful community for over 40 years, and my personal journey of 35 years here, it is time for us to bid farewell this April.”

“Above all, I will treasure the kindness, loyalty, and countless conversations we have shared. Witnessing your families grow and friendships blossom over the years has been a privilege.”
