A well-known hotel and restaurant abruptly closed its doors after operating for 46 years, leaving its loyal patrons in dismay.
Guy’s Thatched Hamlet, situated near Bilsborrow in Lancashire off the A6, has officially ceased operations. The establishment, featuring a 65-room hotel by the St Michael’s Road canal, has terminated all its employees.
A closure notice has been affixed to the hotel’s entrance, signaling the end of its business activities. Spanning nearly 14 acres, the site boasted various amenities such as a pub, dining establishment, sports facilities, function spaces, cricket field, bowling green, and three parking areas.
As disclosed by the Lancashire Post, the posted notice stated, “After 46 years in operation, we confirm the closure of Guy’s Thatched Hamlet. This decision was challenging and made after careful consideration. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our patrons, staff, and suppliers for their unwavering loyalty and support over the years.”
Customers, saddened by the news, have been expressing their emotions on social media platforms. One individual reminisced, “This was where my partner proposed to me in 2012.” Another shared, “I, too, got engaged here in 2015. Such a loss.”
Another commented, “I have been a regular at Guys for years, proposed to my significant other in the restaurant, and received applause from fellow diners. It’s disheartening that it’s closed, hoping someone will preserve its essence.”
Operated by the Wilkinson family since 1980, the business was listed for sale last year, with an approximate net turnover of £4.2 million but without a specified guide price.
The property was described as strategically located, offering easy access to attractions like the Lake District, Fylde Coast, and the Trough of Bowland. With 65 en suite guest rooms, the hotel attracted both leisure and corporate clientele.
Positioned conveniently on the A6 near Bilsborrow village and adjacent to the Lancaster Canal, the property was well-situated to attract business from the surrounding areas due to its proximity to major motorway intersections.
Having undergone extensive renovations and expansions since being acquired over four decades ago, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet had established itself as a distinguished destination in the North West of England. The establishment enjoyed consistent year-round patronage, with peak business periods during the Summer and Festive seasons.
