“British Travelers Warned: Avoid These 7 Destinations in 2026”

British holidaymakers are advised to steer clear of seven destinations this year. While traveling is enjoyable, it can have negative consequences if not done responsibly. Issues such as crowded streets, overwhelmed public transport, rising housing costs, and carbon emissions from flying make it challenging to travel sustainably in 2026.

Every year, the American travel publication Fodor’s releases a ‘red list’ of destinations that it recommends avoiding due to unsustainable tourism practices. The purpose of the No List is to draw attention to destinations where tourism is putting a strain on the environment and local communities, urging travelers to give these locations a break for the time being.

One of the flagged spots is Isola Sacra, a coastal area near Rome known for its ancient Roman Necropolis. Despite being home to around 15,000 residents, its proximity to Rome Fiumicino Airport and scenic coastline have attracted a surge of tourists. Plans for a large port, Fiumicino Waterfront, have sparked controversy and led to Isola Sacra’s inclusion on Fodor’s 2026 No List.

Another destination to avoid is the Canary Islands, popular for their winter sun appeal. With nearly 18 million visitors last year, tourism is a significant driver of the islands’ economy. However, issues such as overtourism protests and airport delays have raised concerns about the negative impacts of tourism on the Canary Islands.

Antarctica, known for its pristine environment, is facing challenges due to increasing visitor numbers. Conservation efforts aim to protect the continent’s fragile ecosystem, but the rise in tourism poses risks to wildlife and the environment.

Glacier National Park in the US is experiencing accelerated glacier melt, leading to a rise in last-chance tourism. The park’s popularity has strained infrastructure and wildlife habitats, highlighting the need for sustainable tourism practices.

Jungfrau in Switzerland, renowned for its picturesque Alpine villages, is grappling with balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation and community well-being. Increased visitor numbers have led to road congestion, wear on hiking trails, and overcrowding at popular sites.

Mexico City has witnessed protests against gentrification and rising rents, with tensions escalating between locals and foreign tourists. The city’s tourism sector is facing backlash, raising concerns about the impact on the local community and visitor experiences.

Kenya’s tourism industry has seen significant growth post-Covid, with a record number of international arrivals in recent years. Coastal cities like Mombasa are particularly vulnerable to overtourism, with challenges including resource depletion, congestion, poor waste management, and threats to the shoreline.

Travelers are advised to consider these factors when planning their trips to ensure responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
