“Canadian General Urges Rapid Modernization for Military Robotics”

Lt.-Gen. Darcy Molstad, leading the Canadian Joint Forces Command (CJFC), emphasized the urgent acquisition of cost-effective, self-sufficient, and reusable weaponry and equipment to address escalating global threats. Speaking at the Canadian Robotics Council 2026 Symposium, Molstad highlighted the imminent surge in procurement orders amid a substantial overhaul of key military platforms.

Addressing a gathering of tech industry experts in Toronto, Molstad praised the untapped potential of Canada’s robotics sector, urging innovation with AI-integrated robotics across various military applications. This call for embracing artificial intelligence in military hardware coincides with ongoing global debates on managing the rapid advancement of AI securely.

While drones are commonly linked with frontline combat, Molstad outlined broader potential applications within the military, including medical support, logistics at supply depots, and automated vehicle inspections by military police. Emphasizing the need to modernize outdated supply depots, Molstad advocated for transitioning to contemporary technologies suitable for defense purposes.

Highlighting the Defense Drone Initiative, Molstad disclosed plans for increased utilization of autonomous systems in the Canadian military to align with evolving technologies. Stressing the necessity of rapid modernization to equip military personnel for deterrence, Molstad underscored the importance of staying ahead to prevent actual conflict.

Partnering with Duncan Stewart, a special executive advisor, Molstad highlighted the challenges of dealing with the government as a customer, emphasizing the need for agility in the face of slow procurement processes. Stewart emphasized the vital role of small innovative firms in driving advancements in autonomous systems compared to traditional large suppliers.

Looking ahead, Molstad projected a continuous stream of requests for proposals for robotic and autonomous systems over the next five years. Recent collaborations, such as the long-term partnership between Canada and Ukraine, signify a strategic shift towards unmanned weapon systems in modern warfare, underlining the responsible adoption of robotic and autonomous technologies with appropriate regulations and oversight.
