In August, the Canadian Real Estate Association reported a decline in home sales compared to the previous year amid ongoing economic challenges that could impact the housing market for the rest of 2026. Total home sales for the month were 37,504, showing a 6.9% decrease from August 2025. When adjusted for seasonal variations, sales dropped by 0.7% compared to July. CREA’s senior economist, Shaun Cathcart, highlighted concerns about increasing inflation risks and potential interest rate hikes, which are contributing to a less favorable economic climate that may affect sales. The national average sale price of a home in August was $668,219, marking a 0.6% increase year-over-year. Additionally, new listings in August saw a 3.3% uptick from the previous month, reversing a trend of three consecutive declines earlier in the summer.
