A convicted murderer, who previously glorified his crime in a rap song, is scheduled for transfer to a less secure prison facility. Jake Fahri, who received a life sentence at 19 for killing Jimmy Mizen by hurling an oven dish at him in a London bakery, is set to move to an open prison. Fahri had been released on parole in 2023 but was sent back to prison in 2025 after it was discovered that he had produced music boasting about the murder.
The Parole Board raised concerns about Fahri’s lack of transparency regarding his music activities and several breaches of his release conditions. Despite Fahri’s defense that he was unaware of certain restrictions, evidence from his probation officer contradicted his claims. Although Fahri and supporters advocated for his release during a hearing, the Justice Secretary, David Lammy, opposed it.
The Parole Board ultimately ruled against Fahri’s release, citing concerns about public safety. They recommended that Fahri undergo reflection on his behavior and attitude in an open prison setting to better understand himself. Jimmy Mizen’s mother expressed relief at the decision to keep Fahri in custody, stating it should have been made earlier.
Open prisons offer minimal security and allow inmates to spend a significant portion of their day outside for work or educational purposes. The final decision on Fahri’s transfer will rest with Justice Secretary David Lammy. The Mirror has reached out to the Parole Board and Ministry of Justice for comments.
