Danish armed forces stationed at the Joint Arctic Command in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, are facing a heightened sense of urgency. The current headquarters, a modestly painted blue building, lacks extensive fortifications that would deter potential threats, including those from the US.
Following Donald Trump’s proposal to acquire Greenland in January 2025, a £3.5 billion initiative for Arctic expansion was unveiled. This plan includes the establishment of a new command headquarters in Nuuk to enhance surveillance capabilities in the Arctic region.
Despite initial skepticism, Denmark has committed to purchasing an additional 16 F-35 fighter jets from the US, boosting its total fleet to 43 aircraft. This move, aimed at strengthening defense capabilities in the region, has drawn criticism from Trump, who belittled the investment by suggesting it would only add a “single dog sled.”
Denmark, in collaboration with Greenland and the Faroe Islands, has crafted a comprehensive defense package. This package encompasses the acquisition of two new Arctic ships, maritime patrol aircraft, drones, and early warning radar systems.
Personnel stationed in Nuuk are cognizant of their duty to engage any invader, as mandated by a 1952 directive. The directive requires immediate action without awaiting orders in the event of a territorial breach, irrespective of the invader’s identity.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any military attempt to seize Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, would jeopardize NATO’s integrity. While Trump alleged Russian and Chinese naval presence in Greenland, Danish and Norwegian defense authorities have emphasized growing Russian naval activities in the Arctic but have not confirmed Chinese warship sightings in their waters.
