A tragic incident occurred when a construction crane toppled onto a passenger train in north-eastern Thailand, resulting in a fiery derailment that claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals. Additionally, 64 people sustained injuries, with ongoing rescue efforts and medical assistance being provided. The accident took place on a section of a high-speed rail project intended to link China with various parts of south-east Asia.
The crane, employed in constructing an elevated railway segment, collapsed as the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Images from Thai media depicted smoke billowing above the site and rescue workers navigating overturned train carriages with visible damage. Notably, the train had three carriages, with the latter two bearing the brunt of the destruction.
Transport minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan disclosed that 195 individuals were on board the train, prompting an investigative directive from him. This elevated section forms part of a joint Thai-Chinese initiative aiming to connect Bangkok with Nong Khai province, bordering Laos. The project, with an investment exceeding 520 billion baht, aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Reports confirmed the death toll has climbed to 29, leading Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to demand accountability for the tragedy. He expressed concerns over potential negligence and deviations from safety protocols contributing to the incident. The youngest injured party, a one-year-old, underscores the severity of the situation, with medical facilities treating numerous casualties, including 55 patients at Sikhio Hospital.
Eyewitnesses described the crane’s impact on the train, with one witness recounting how the vehicle was torn apart. Rescuers, aided by hydraulic cutters, diligently worked to extricate trapped passengers from the wreckage. Authorities, including the State Railway of Thailand, have initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain the causes behind the calamity, emphasizing the need for comprehensive safety measures in future railway projects.
The incident, occurring in Nakhon Ratchasima province, underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols in large-scale infrastructure development. With ongoing rescue operations and investigations, the community awaits further updates on the aftermath of this tragic event.
