Eland Cables, a company specializing in electrical cables for major projects, has taken the initiative to implement a pay rise for its employees ahead of schedule. The pay increase, which aligns with the Real Living Wage, is aimed at supporting workers in covering essential expenses like food and bills.
Effective immediately, the hourly rate will see a boost of 85p to £13.45 for most workers and 95p to £14.80 for those in London. This increase surpasses the legal minimum wage requirements. The Real Living Wage, applicable to employees aged 18 and above, is part of a voluntary scheme that aims to ensure fair compensation for workers.
While the statutory deadline for implementing the new rates is set for May 2026, Eland Cables has chosen to roll out the pay raise early, benefiting hundreds of its employees. One such employee, Ben, expressed gratitude for the early wage hike, highlighting the positive impact it will have on his family as Christmas approaches.
JS Pelland, the executive director of Eland Cables, emphasized the company’s commitment to fairness, employee loyalty, and long-term success by prioritizing the early adoption of the Real Living Wage. Pelland stressed the importance of treating employees well, leading to higher engagement, pride in work, and improved outcomes for all.
The company’s decision to uphold the Real Living Wage aligns with its focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and well-being strategies. Eland Cables has experienced significant positive results since becoming a Living Wage signatory, including enhanced staff retention, reduced absenteeism, increased productivity, and notable revenue growth.
Furthermore, the company’s dedication to internal advancement opportunities has led to success stories like a former site cleaner progressing to the role of shift manager. Pelland highlighted the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and purpose among employees to drive consistency, quality, and trust within the organization.
