A father has been given a 30-year prison sentence for murdering his own daughter, sending disturbing text messages to his sons following the crime.
Ryan al Najjar, aged 18, was discovered bound and gagged in a pond at a secluded country park. Her father, Khaled al Najjar, took her life, citing her increasing westernized behavior, influenced by her brothers Muhanad, 25, and Muhamad, 24.
The family had sought asylum in the Netherlands to escape the turmoil in Syria but tragically, Ryan was killed due to her modernized lifestyle, which her father disapproved of.
Ryan’s body was found wrapped in duct tape in shallow water at a nature reserve, with traces of her father’s DNA present. Evidence suggested she was alive when thrown into the water. In a chilling message to his family, Khaled expressed regret for not burying her.
During the trial, it was revealed that the brothers had accompanied Ryan to the remote location where the murder occurred, implicating them in her death. Data from their phones and algae on their shoes linked them to the crime scene.
Khaled fled to Syria post the murder, living with another woman. He received a 30-year sentence in absentia, with calls for his extradition back to the Netherlands. The brothers were also convicted for aiding in the murder, each receiving a 20-year sentence.
