A trial has commenced for former gang member Duane (Keffe D) Davis, charged with murder in connection to the tragic shooting death of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur nearly three decades ago. The trial, being held in Las Vegas, where the incident occurred, started with the selection of jurors and is anticipated to span around a month.
Davis, aged 63, faces a murder charge for allegedly playing a significant role in Shakur’s demise in 1996. While not accused of pulling the trigger, prosecutors aim to establish that Davis was the influential figure within the group that targeted Shakur on the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996.
During the jury selection process, Davis, dressed in a blue shirt and tie, sat alongside his legal counsel as Nevada Judge Carli Kierny screened a pool of 75 potential jurors for any disqualifying factors like medical conditions or conflicts that could affect their service.
Shakur’s cousin, William Leslane, expressed some skepticism about the trial’s ability to deliver true justice, noting that the pursuit of justice had been delayed for too long since his cousin’s tragic death. Leslane emphasized that justice should have been swiftly pursued right after the murder, lamenting the passage of three decades before the trial began.
The trial will heavily rely on evidence from Davis’s 2019 co-authored book, “Compton Street Legend,” in which he detailed his alleged involvement in the shooting incident. Davis recounted the events leading up to Shakur’s death, attributing it to a retaliation motive following an altercation between his nephew and individuals associated with Death Row Records, Shakur’s label.
Shakur, a prominent figure in the rap scene, was known for his socially conscious music and multifaceted talents as a musician, actor, and poet. His untimely death at the age of 25 sent shockwaves through the music industry, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to influence hip-hop culture to this day.
