“Fugitive Father Found in NZ After 4 Years”

For nearly four years, authorities had been on the lookout for Tom Phillips, a father who disappeared with his three young children after a disagreement with their mother. Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, aged eight, seven, and five at the time, were compelled to live in squalid conditions outdoors at a makeshift camp set up by their father, who had been denied custody.

In September 2025, after almost four years on the run since 2021, law enforcement finally apprehended Phillips in Marokopa, New Zealand, where he was shot by police during a failed burglary attempt. Reports also revealed the appalling living situation of the children, who were found residing in a muddy camp deep within the wilderness, being fed animal food by Phillips.

Authorities discovered bags of animal feed, including various types of maize typically used for livestock. Additionally, firearms and ammunition were uncovered at the site, with one of Phillips’ children, ten-year-old Maverick, seen holding a gun upon police arrival.

A local landowner described the remote location as dense and easily concealable, suggesting that the family may have constantly moved around with potential outside assistance. Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders highlighted the challenging environment that served as the family’s hideout, indicating that Phillips likely had help from others.

Phillips had disappeared into the wilderness in 2021 from the family farm in Marokopa. Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers confirmed the children were physically unharmed but emphasized the importance of their mental well-being going forward.

The children’s mother, known as Cat, expressed a mix of relief and sadness after the conclusion of the four-year ordeal, eagerly anticipating the safe return of her children. She hoped for a peaceful and secure reunion for all involved after the distressing events that unfolded.
