Police are currently investigating an incident where three high school students fell from an upper-level window of a double-decker bus in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, yesterday afternoon. The emergency response, including an air ambulance, was prompt and arrived at the scene on Bolton Road just before 4 pm.
The three boys, two aged 13 and one 14, who attend St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School nearby, were swiftly transported to the hospital with potentially severe injuries. Fortunately, their conditions are not life-threatening.
According to Greater Manchester Police, the incident occurred following an emergency stop made by the bus. A spokesperson from the GMP mentioned that the children fell as a result of leaning on an emergency exit window and assured that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Images of the bus, identified as the 950 service, revealed a missing side window on the top deck and broken glass strewn on the sidewalk, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
In a letter addressed to parents, headteacher Mark Dumican confirmed the boys’ well-being and extended support to students who witnessed the event. He emphasized that the injuries are not life-threatening and that all three boys have received medical evaluation.
Additionally, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham remarked that the incident seemed to be linked to a disturbance on the upper deck of the bus. He expressed concern for the youths and their families, noting that while there were serious injuries, none were life-threatening.
Vision Bus, the Bolton-based company operating the 950 service, stated they are conducting an internal investigation and cooperating with the police. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) affirmed its collaboration with law enforcement and the bus operator to aid in the inquiry.
