Yemeni officials reported that six individuals were fatally injured in an assault by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on a vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb strait on Tuesday. The casualties included four crew members and two members of the government-allied National Resistance Forces, according to Yemen’s coast guard. The rebels launched three ballistic missiles at a Yemeni commercial ship, as stated by the Transportation Ministry of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
This incident marks the first recorded fatalities from Houthi assaults on maritime targets off Yemen during the ongoing conflict in the region. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has shifted attention to the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern tip of Yemen, serving as an alternative route for Saudi Arabia’s oil shipments.
The Houthi rebels targeted the government-controlled port city of Mokha on the Red Sea and other regions within the country. Yemen’s military confirmed that the rebels carried out missile and drone strikes on Mokha and the central province of Marib, resulting in casualties. Recent attacks by the Houthis in Marib and Hadramout claimed numerous lives, including government troops and civilians. Mokha, a strategic port under Yemen’s legitimate government, was also struck, causing casualties and disrupting operations.
These aggressive actions by the Houthis against Yemeni government forces and Saudi Arabian oil facilities have the potential to escalate the conflict in Yemen and create additional tensions in the Middle East. The Houthis’ assaults could reignite the civil war in Yemen following a fragile truce established in 2022, opening up a new front in the regional crisis.
In a social media statement, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the chief negotiator and spokesperson for the Houthis, accused Saudi Arabia of exploiting the ceasefire to enforce a blockade on Yemen. Despite the call for negotiations, Abdul-Salam emphasized the need to lift the blockade as a crucial condition for any settlement. On a separate note, the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an attack on a cargo vessel near al-Mokha, Yemen, resulting in casualties, adding to the maritime security concerns in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highlighted Tehran’s demands, emphasizing Iran’s resilience in the face of challenges from the U.S. and Israel. Iran has stood firm on its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, demanding an end to the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and the lifting of sanctions. The closure of the vital waterway has impacted global oil trade, keeping energy prices in focus ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
President Donald Trump commented on the situation, noting the impact of the U.S. Navy’s blockade on Iran’s economy, suggesting financial constraints on Iran despite its disruptive capabilities.
