Israeli Military Launches Internal Investigations into Gaza Deaths

Israel’s military has announced that it will conduct internal investigations into the deaths of Palestinian individuals in Gaza, including the killing of Hind Rajab, a young girl in January 2024, and 15 emergency and aid workers in March 2025. However, human rights organizations have noted that such investigations often do not result in convictions.

The military’s decision to launch these investigations follows assessments by its Fact-Finding and Assessment Mechanism, with outcomes disclosed for five incidents involving Palestinian fatalities. Notably, the examination of the deaths of seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen in April 2024 concluded that there was no evidence of criminal misconduct warranting a criminal investigation.

In response to criticism, the Israeli military emphasized the complexities of its operational reality, stating that it is committed to examining exceptional incidents in compliance with international and domestic laws. The killings of Hind Rajab and the 15 Palestinian medics had garnered international attention.

Israeli rights groups have raised concerns about the lack of accountability for soldiers involved in such incidents, citing minimal indictments and lenient sentences when convictions do occur. Hind Rajab’s grandmother expressed skepticism about Israel’s ability to conduct impartial investigations and called for international scrutiny into her granddaughter’s death and the treatment of children in Gaza.

According to UNICEF, over 64,000 Palestinian children have been killed or injured since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. A report by the United Nations Human Rights Council accused Israeli security forces of intentionally targeting and killing Palestinian children in Gaza, a claim that Israel rejected as propaganda.

The tragic story of Hind Rajab, who pleaded for help while trapped in a car during an Israeli offensive in 2023, has drawn global attention. The subsequent discovery of her body, along with her deceased relatives and rescue workers, further highlighted the toll of the conflict. The deaths of 15 aid workers, recovered from a grave in the Gaza Strip, prompted calls for accountability and justice.

As investigations unfold, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding these incidents and the need for ensuring the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers in conflict zones.
