London Marathon Considers Two-Day Format for 2027

London Marathon organizers are discussing the possibility of expanding the event to span two days in 2027 to accommodate a larger number of participants. The iconic marathon, which has been a fixture in the capital since 1981, may undergo changes to allow for a weekend-long schedule due to the increasing interest in the event.

A spokesperson for the London Marathon stated that the aim is to make the event more inclusive and beneficial for the city by exploring innovative ways to involve more people. While no official approval has been granted yet, discussions are underway with partners and stakeholders regarding the potential shift to a two-day format for the 2027 TCS London Marathon.

Hugh Brasher, the chief executive, emphasized the marathon’s status as the world’s most popular and highlighted ongoing efforts to engage a wider audience and bring positive impacts to London. With just weeks left before the 2026 TCS London Marathon on April 26, the focus remains on delivering a remarkable experience for all participants and upholding the event’s original purpose of spreading joy and accomplishment in challenging times.

The Mayor of London’s office expressed eagerness to collaborate with London Marathon partners to explore the feasibility of spreading the event over two days next year. This year’s marathon received an overwhelming response with 1,133,813 applicants through the public ballot, marking a substantial 36% increase from the previous year. The event also set a new record for fundraising, generating £87.3 million, and secured a Guinness World Record for the highest number of finishers in a single marathon, with 56,640 participants completing the race.
