A man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of raping two young women at a Holiday Inn hotel and assaulting a third woman by spiking her drink. Philip Duffield, 25, committed the crimes in Shrewsbury in 2024 before targeting the third victim in Birmingham later that year.
Following his trial at Birmingham Crown Court, Duffield was convicted of two counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration. The judge deemed him ‘dangerous’ and imposed an additional three-year license term.
The incidents occurred after Duffield and a friend visited a Wetherspoons at the Shrewsbury Hotel, where he sexually harassed the first two victims. The group later went to Albert’s Shed and Fever nightclub before returning to the Holiday Inn, where Duffield had pre-booked a room. Surveillance footage captured Duffield carrying one of the victims into the room while his friend caused harm to the other victim.
During the night, Duffield raped the 18-year-old victim while she was semi-conscious, and later assaulted the 20-year-old victim in front of the first victim. One of the victims reported the assault to the police the next morning, leading to Duffield’s arrest.
In a separate incident in December of the same year, Duffield brought a woman back to his home after a night out at Glamorous nightclub. He spiked her drink with vodka mixed with Fanta, causing her to lose consciousness and wake up to being sexually assaulted.
The judge described Duffield’s actions as premeditated and declared him a ‘dangerous offender’ due to his lack of remorse and understanding of the impact on the victims. The victims expressed the emotional toll of the assaults, with one victim mentioning anxiety, depression, and nightmares, leading to significant life changes.
Despite claims of positive character and immaturity, the judge highlighted Duffield’s education and employment history, emphasizing his accountability for the crimes committed.
