Manchester United is considering bringing back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a temporary basis until the end of the season. The former United manager was spotted in Cheshire amidst rumors of his potential return to the club.
Solskjaer was dismissed in November 2021 after leading the team for almost three years. He initially took over from Jose Mourinho as interim head coach in late 2018 before being appointed full-time in 2019. Following the decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim, United is in search of an interim head coach.
Reports from The Manchester Evening News suggest that Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Carrick have also been approached to lead the team until the season concludes. While Van Nistelrooy previously managed United on an interim basis, Solskjaer and Carrick are now being considered for the role after Solskjaer’s departure from Besiktas in August.
It is believed that Solskjaer, who was recently seen at a Waitrose store in Wilmslow, Cheshire, is a top candidate for the position. The Norwegian, who played alongside Darren Fletcher, has expressed his interest in returning to manage United until the end of the season.
During his previous tenure, Solskjaer achieved consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League and led the team to the Europa League final, where they were defeated by Villarreal. His second-place finish in 2021 was only matched by Mourinho since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
United is seeking an interim solution until the end of the season before appointing a permanent head coach for the next season. Fletcher is expected to take charge for upcoming matches against Burnley and Brighton.
