An extensive search is underway following the escape of two individuals, one of whom is a convicted murderer, from an open prison facility. Avon and Somerset Police have shared updated CCTV footage of Matthew Armstrong, aged 35, and Daniel Washbourne, aged 40, who absconded from HMP Leyhill on New Year’s Day.
The escape happened between 5pm and 8pm on New Year’s Day, with Armstrong, who was involved in a murder case during a robbery in Warwickshire in the late 2000s, being one of the absconders. Staff at HMP Leyhill reported the incident, prompting an immediate response from Avon and Somerset Police for investigations.
Authorities are currently examining several reported sightings received in recent days to track the movements of Armstrong and Washbourne. One report indicated two individuals matching their descriptions were spotted in Bristol. Subsequent CCTV footage captured a man, resembling Armstrong, walking along specific roads in the area, potentially wearing the same burgundy coat as when he left the prison.
Police suspect that the pair may have attempted to travel outside the Avon and Somerset region to evade detection and are coordinating with other law enforcement agencies nationwide. Armstrong is described as white, approximately 5ft 9ins, with ginger hair and ties to Warwickshire, while Washbourne is white, about 5ft 6ins, slim, with brown hair, clean-shaven, and has connections to Herefordshire.
Efforts have been made to inform the victims and families affected by the absconders’ previous offenses sensitively. Meanwhile, Aaron Thomas, aged 39, was apprehended by Avon and Somerset Police in Bristol and charged with escaping lawful custody. He appeared in court and is currently remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
