“Manitoba Joins Western Canada in Permanent Daylight Time”

Western Canada continues to resist changing its time system, with Manitoba becoming the latest province to opt for a permanent daylight time. This decision follows similar moves by British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Saskatchewan in recent years.

The shift in Manitoba’s time system will simplify life for its residents, but it will create a unique situation for a small part of northwestern Ontario. This area, including Kenora, will now share a time zone with Manitoba, putting it one hour behind Thunder Bay to the east and Winnipeg to the west during the winter months.

While this adjustment may seem unusual, it is not uncommon for provinces in Canada to have multiple time zones. For instance, the East Kootenay region in British Columbia aligns its time with Alberta, and Labrador observes Atlantic time while Newfoundland does not. Nunavut spans across three different time zones.

In 2020, Ontario passed a law to eliminate the biannual time changes, contingent on Quebec and New York doing the same. While Quebec has not made any changes at the provincial level, the northern region of Nunavik has transitioned to permanent daylight time.

Across the border in the U.S., the House of Representatives has approved a bill to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide, awaiting consideration by the Senate. In a similar vein, the New York state Senate is also deliberating on a similar proposal.
