A victim of the Post Office Horizon scandal shared her struggle for justice after her husband’s conviction was overturned. Glenys Eaton and her husband David were sentenced to six months in prison due to discrepancies found by the Horizon software. While Mr. Eaton’s conviction was annulled in 2024, Mrs. Eaton had to threaten officials with a judicial review before her conviction was deemed eligible for quashing.
Speaking to MPs, Mrs. Eaton described her harrowing experience in prison and emphasized their innocence. Despite her husband receiving an initial compensation offer of £200,000, Mrs. Eaton is still awaiting her compensation. The couple, who took over their Post Office branch before the introduction of the Horizon system, were arrested in 2001 for the same offense.
Advocates representing the Eatons highlighted the challenges in getting Mrs. Eaton’s conviction overturned, citing extensive correspondence and the need for legal action. Concerns were raised by MPs about potentially unidentified victims of the Horizon scandal and delays in addressing convictions. The government has allocated £1.8 billion for compensating victims, with ongoing discussions about Fujitsu’s contribution.
Fujitsu, responsible for the Horizon system, acknowledged the presence of errors and bugs but stated that compensation details are pending a report on the scandal. The company faced criticism for its handling of the situation, with MPs questioning its commitment to addressing the compensation bill. Labour MP Liam Byrne expressed disbelief at Fujitsu’s stance, describing their behavior as detrimental to taxpayers.
Mr. Patterson defended Fujitsu’s position, denying accusations of parasitic behavior and highlighting the government’s discretion in contract extensions.
