Two intrepid British climbers, Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker, shared a daring ambition to conquer the world’s highest and most perilous peaks. Tragically, their lives were cut short on Mount Everest in 1982 as they attempted a challenging ascent on the North East Ridge, a route known for its treacherous Three Pinnacles. Boardman, aged 31, and Tasker, aged 33, were seasoned Himalayan climbers who embarked on bold, lightweight expeditions that demanded precision and teamwork to ensure survival.
On May 17, 1982, Boardman and Tasker ventured from their high camp towards the upper ridge of Everest. Despite making steady progress towards the Second Pinnacle at over 8,000 meters above sea level, where oxygen levels are low and any misstep could be fatal, their journey took a tragic turn. The mountaineering community was already reeling from the loss of Marty Hoey, a member of an American expedition, who met a fatal accident just days earlier on Everest’s north face.
The disappearance of Boardman and Tasker remained shrouded in mystery until a decade later when a grim discovery was made near the Second Pinnacle. Peter Boardman’s body was found, but Joe Tasker’s remains were never recovered, leaving lingering questions about their final moments. The duo’s untimely demise reverberated throughout the climbing world, as they were not only skilled mountaineers but also talented writers who eloquently depicted the allure and challenges of mountain exploration.
In honor of their legacy, the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature was established as a lasting tribute to commemorate the lives of two individuals who dedicated themselves to the mountains and paid the ultimate price.
