During a Russian assault on Zaporizhzhia, a southeastern city in Ukraine, seven workers lost their lives at a steel plant on Tuesday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Moscow utilized North Korean ballistic missiles in the attack. The Zaporizhstal plant had to stop its operations after being struck by Zircon hypersonic missiles, guided aerial bombs, and ballistic missiles provided by Pyongyang.
The parent company Metinvest Group reported that the ballistic missile strike occurred while employees were heading to a shelter following an air-raid alert. The statement confirmed seven fatalities and 24 injuries. The incident resulted in a complete stoppage of production at the plant, with other affected facilities running at reduced capacity.
Retired major-general Scott Clancy highlights that Ukraine’s battle is one of attrition, as Western support keeps it in the conflict but falls short of ensuring victory. He emphasized the urgent need for Ukraine to enhance its air defence systems and long-range capabilities as Russia intensifies missile production.
The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed targeting a metallurgical plant in Zaporizhzhia that produced flat-rolled steel utilized by the Ukrainian military. Additionally, Russian forces attacked the Nova Poshta sorting complex in Kyiv, known for distributing dual-use goods, including drone components and electronic warfare equipment.
While Russia did not immediately acknowledge the use of North Korean missiles in the Zaporizhzhia assault, there was no response from Pyongyang.
Ukraine’s Ongoing Actions
Overnight incidents in the Ukrainian regions of Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk resulted in six more casualties, with a Russian strike in Kyiv causing fires in the capital, according to Ukrainian authorities. These events followed a Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk, Russia, which reportedly led to numerous casualties.
Another drone attack in Russia’s Voronezh region caused one fatality, two injuries, and warehouse fires, prompting the evacuation of facilities owned by Wildberries, a frequent target of Ukrainian strikes. Kyiv’s recent strikes included targeting an oil refinery in Orsk, Russia.
