“Student’s Deadly Rampage Shocks Philippines”

A tragic incident unfolded at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday as a student armed with two pistols fatally shot a fellow student before taking his own life. This disturbing attack, livestreamed using a body-worn camera, marked the second school shooting resulting in death in the country within a span of two months.

The violent episode occurred at the Ateneo de Zamboanga university campus, where gunfire echoed through the high school building, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of students. Amid the chaos, two individuals sustained injuries, according to local police and city authorities.

The perpetrator, identified as Mohammad Mael Jalani, a Grade 9 student, initially targeted a teacher but missed, proceeding to shoot a student on the fourth floor before ending his own life on the fifth floor, as detailed in the preliminary police report.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla disclosed that the assailant indiscriminately fired shots, striking a Grade 10 student before ultimately committing suicide by jumping from the building. The distressing sequence of events was broadcasted on Facebook Live, offering glimpses of the unfolding tragedy.

Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso and law enforcement confirmed the tragic outcome, emphasizing that the shooter turned the gun on himself. The incident took place within a secured section of the university campus, prompting Ateneo to suspend classes across all levels for two days following the attack.

Despite efforts to fortify security in educational institutions nationwide, such as the aftermath of a prior school shooting in central Tacloban city in June, wherein three students lost their lives and numerous others were injured, this recent tragedy underscores the ongoing challenges of preventing such violent acts.

The prevalence of firearm-related crimes in the Philippines, exacerbated by the widespread availability of unlicensed weapons, underscores the need for continued vigilance and preventive measures to safeguard school communities and prevent further tragedies.
