A devastated family launched a fundraising campaign for their teenage son following what they thought was his tragic death in a car accident, but a significant turn of events unfolded.
Authorities confirmed that Trevor Wynn, 17, had passed away in a traffic incident in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on December 13, prompting his family to initiate a GoFundMe page while preparing for his funeral. However, three weeks later, the teenager regained consciousness from a coma and provided his identity to medical staff. The mistaken identification by South Yorkshire Police led to Trevor’s relatives sharing a remarkable update with donors, revealing that the young man was actually alive.
The police informed the Worksop, Nottinghamshire teen’s family that he had allegedly died around 3 am less than two weeks before Christmas. Plans were in place for a funeral for Trevor, also known as TJ, on Friday, but a significant twist occurred.
An 18-year-old named Joshua Johnson and an unnamed 17-year-old female driver tragically lost their lives when a silver Toyota Corolla veered off the road away from Dinnington, South Yorkshire. Initially, authorities believed Joshua was hospitalized under sedation, but Trevor’s awakening from a coma led to the shocking case of mistaken identity.
In a surprising update on the GoFundMe page, a family spokesperson stated, “IMPORTANT UPDATE – PLEASE READ. We want to address something openly and honestly. Following recent confirmation, it has now come to light that TJ is alive.”
“The police initially made a mistake and identified the wrong person, and we were informed incorrectly at the time. This has since been clarified, and we want to be completely transparent with everyone who has supported us.”
The focus now shifts to aiding TJ’s recovery and rehabilitation, along with providing support to his family amid the significant challenges they are facing during this tumultuous period. TJ endured a severe, life-altering ordeal.
The fundraiser emphasized that the teenager’s recovery journey will involve medical treatment, rehabilitation, travel, accommodation, and family-related expenses.

An 18-year-old was apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, while a 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of obstructing justice. Both individuals are currently on bail pending further investigations.
