“UK Homes Embracing Internet TV, Threatening Traditional Broadcast”

Millions of households in the UK are already utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content viewing. A recent study, sponsored by Sky, indicates that nearly all homes could have access to internet-based TV by the mid-2030s, potentially leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial distribution methods like Freeview.

Various alternatives to aerial-based TV are already available, including Sky’s latest streaming services and the Freely platform, which is affiliated with the creators of Freeview. Freely is now integrated into many new television sets, offering both live and on-demand programming through a broadband connection.

As more internet-connected devices enter homes, a shift away from traditional broadcast TV is evident, with a growing number of households opting for streaming services.

Another challenge facing Freeview is the potential sharing of its radio frequencies with mobile operators after 2031, impacting the current over-the-air transmission system.

The maintenance costs associated with the existing TV infrastructure are escalating, prompting discussions within the UK government about future strategies.

Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the potential synergy between modern TV services and societal inclusivity. He emphasized the feasibility of transitioning entirely to internet-based TV in the 2030s, which could help bridge the digital gap and yield significant cost savings compared to maintaining legacy systems.

While some individuals may embrace the shift towards streaming, there are concerns raised by a petition with over 100,000 signatures opposing the discontinuation of Freeview. The petition emphasizes the essential role of Freeview for many households and the potential financial implications of relying solely on internet-based TV services.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, expressed her reliance on Freeview for entertainment and information, highlighting concerns about the complexity and reliability of online streaming services.

Stay tuned for further updates on the evolving landscape of television services.
