The United Nations voted on Friday to transition from the outdated Mercator global map to a more accurate representation of countries’ true sizes. This resolution, championed by African nations, aims to combat the misconception that Africa is on the margins.
Togo spearheaded the effort to support the African Union’s push to minimize the use of the Mercator map, known for distorting the proportions of land masses, especially those closer to the poles. The Mercator projection falsely portrays Greenland as similar in size to Africa, despite Africa being approximately 14 times larger.
“A just world begins with an equitable map,” stated Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey prior to the vote. The resolution endorses the Equal Earth projection, which provides a more precise depiction of continent sizes.
Although non-binding, the resolution emphasizes that it does not challenge the suitability of the Mercator projection for maritime and aerial navigation. The UN General Assembly passed the resolution with 164 in favor, one against (the United States), and six abstentions.
Togo intends to update its school geography materials by the year’s end, becoming the first country to do so. Dussey emphasized the importance of setting an example for other nations by moving away from the outdated Mercator map towards the Equal Earth projection, which offers a more accurate view of the world.
In upcoming months, Togo plans to collaborate with African Union members and global supporters to encourage wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection. Dussey highlighted the need to involve mapping, GPS, and other location-based technology companies in discussions regarding the transition.
This initiative aligns with broader African efforts to address colonial-era legacies without targeting any specific civilization. Dussey emphasized that the world and Africa are evolving, signaling a shift away from the colonial remnants that have long influenced global perspectives.
