Village’s £29 Million Lottery Win Marred by Error, Leaving Some Residents Empty-Handed

A village in Villamanín, Spain, was left reeling after a lottery win of £29 million turned sour for some residents due to an administrative mishap. In a stroke of luck on December 22, 450 villagers landed the jackpot in Spain’s El Gordo Christmas lottery using the winning number 79,432, collectively raking in over €34 million (£29.6 million). However, 50 individuals missed out on their share of the prize money because of an administrative oversight.

The El Gordo lottery boasted a total prize pool of a staggering €2.77 billion (£2.4 billion), with each winning ticket worth €4 million (£3.4 million). Players had the option to purchase a full ticket for €200 (£174) or buy tenths of tickets to claim a fraction of the prize.

The Villamanín festival committee, which had been purchasing tickets for seven years to fund local activities, struck gold when their chosen number won. Unfortunately, due to the failure to register some tickets officially, 50 individuals lost out on a significant sum of money.

Accusations of fraud were hurled at the organizers, but the committee denied any wrongdoing, stating they did not steal anything. To resolve the issue, the committee agreed to surrender a portion of their winnings, amounting to €1.2 to €2 million (£1 to £1.7 million), and a percentage from other prizes will be added to compensate the affected players.

Efforts are underway to establish a process to rectify the situation, with the committee urging patience and understanding from the impacted residents. Legal specialists have been engaged to ensure a secure and rigorous resolution for all parties involved.

Despite the proposed compromise, some residents are considering legal action to seek full payment or hold the organizers accountable. The village is navigating the aftermath of the lottery win with hopes of finding a fair resolution for all affected individuals.
