The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has given a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated that there are significant differences between the two parties on crucial matters.
Alia Hussain, the chair of the union’s WestJet division, emphasized the need for changes and a fair agreement. She mentioned in a press release that efforts are ongoing to avoid a strike and that negotiations will continue ceaselessly.
In response to the strike notice, WestJet issued a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline, which is the second-largest in Canada, expressed its commitment to ongoing discussions to secure a resolution. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers due to the situation.
Although the union’s notice does not guarantee a strike, if an agreement is not reached, job action could begin at 12:01 a.m. MT on Sunday. WestJet is allowing passengers with flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4 to make changes or cancellations without incurring fees.
Travellers on WestJet Encore regional service or code-share flights are not expected to be impacted by the strike. The airline has assured affected guests of refunds or alternative arrangements if delays or cancellations occur.
Additionally, an agreement has been reached between the two sides outlining procedures for grounding aircraft and ensuring cabin crew return home in case of a work stoppage. One of the key concerns for the union is unpaid ground duties, while WestJet argues that all responsibilities are compensated through a credit hour system rather than hourly wages.
Experts have highlighted the potential financial losses for WestJet in the event of a strike, especially during a peak travel period. The airline operates a substantial number of daily flights, serving a high volume of passengers on a regular basis.
