“Keir Starmer Stresses International Law Amid US Strikes in Venezuela”

Keir Starmer emphasized the significance of upholding international law following the recent US military strikes in Venezuela. The strikes, announced by US President Donald Trump after a series of explosions rocked Venezuela’s capital, targeted key areas including Fort Tiuna, the Venezuelan ministry of defense, and an area near a major military base, causing power outages.

In response, the UK PM refrained from condemning the strikes, expressing the need to gather all relevant information. He clarified that the UK was not involved in the operation and was focused on ensuring the safety of British nationals in Venezuela. Mr. Starmer reiterated the importance of abiding by international law and emphasized the need to verify facts before taking further action.

Regarding the situation in Venezuela, residents reported multiple explosions and low-flying aircraft in Caracas, heightening tensions. President Trump later confirmed large-scale strikes, claiming that Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife had been apprehended and flown out of the country. The US has a history of conflict with Venezuela, with Trump previously accusing the nation of drug trafficking.

Political leaders like Ed Davey from the Liberal Democrats and Zack Polanski from the Green Party urged the UK PM to denounce the US military intervention in Venezuela, citing concerns about international law violations and escalating violence. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office advised against all travel to Venezuela, instructing British nationals to stay sheltered and prepared for potential changes in travel plans.
