Naomi Osaka has made the tough decision to withdraw from the Australian Open just before her third-round match. The 16th seed was set to face Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena but will now be replaced by the Australian qualifier in the last 16.
In a statement on Instagram, Osaka expressed her disappointment, citing the need to address a physical issue following her previous match. She thanked her fans for their support and her team for standing by her during this challenging time.
Speaking to the media through Tennis Australia, Osaka revealed that the injury she is dealing with had resurfaced from previous instances. She attempted to play through the pain but ultimately had to withdraw to prevent further harm, especially considering the changes her body has undergone post-pregnancy.
Osaka’s journey in the Australian Open included wins against Sorana Cirstea and Antonia Ruzic but unfortunately had to withdraw due to her health condition. This marks her second consecutive tournament withdrawal after a similar situation at the Japan Open last year.
Although Osaka began the year representing Japan at the United Cup in Perth, she faced health issues during the matches, affecting her performance. She acknowledged the challenges she faced due to not feeling at her best physically.
Looking ahead, Osaka remains optimistic about her future performances, taking each day and match as it comes. Her focus is on gradual improvement and recovery to return to the top of her game.
