A US Navy plane has been observed flying near the coastline of Mexico in response to President Donald Trump’s warnings of potential military involvement in the region.
The P-8 Poseidon aircraft was detected conducting surveillance and reconnaissance activities off Tijuana, located directly south of California. Originating from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington, the plane flew over Oregon and California before circling over Mexican and Southern Californian shores. Equipped with sensors capable of detecting targets above and below the water’s surface, the P-8 is commonly used to monitor suspicious maritime activities.
Covering areas from Southern California to Baja and Ensenada, the aircraft traveled approximately 352 miles into the Pacific Ocean, including regions near San Diego and Tijuana. While the purpose of this flight remains unclear, it coincides with President Trump’s recent statements regarding Mexico’s role in drug smuggling.
President Trump implied the potential for military action similar to that in Venezuela if Mexico fails to combat drug cartels effectively. He emphasized the need to address drug trafficking, mentioning the possibility of intervention to save lives.
Recent discussions at the UN Security Council highlighted global concerns over Trump’s military strategies, particularly in Venezuela. Allies and adversaries criticized both his actions in Venezuela and his suggestions of expanding military operations to other countries like Colombia and Mexico due to drug-related accusations.
Although French President Emmanuel Macron supported the capture of Maduro, France’s UN representative raised concerns about violations of international law by UN Security Council members, including the US. The US defended its actions in Venezuela as a justified law enforcement operation, while challenging the criticism from the council.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concerns about potential breaches of international law during the military operations, emphasizing the significance of upholding international norms in shaping future international relations.
