“Max and Keira’s Law Marks 18th Birthday Milestone”

Max Johnson, the young man whose life-saving heart transplant inspired a change in organ donation laws, recently marked his 18th birthday. He expressed profound gratitude to the family of Keira Ball, the young girl whose heart now beats in his chest. Prime Minister Theresa May was moved by Max’s story, leading to the introduction of the groundbreaking legislation five years ago.

Named Max and Keira’s Law, the legislation in England assumes adults as organ donors unless they choose to opt out. Max, who reflects on Keira’s gift at various milestones, including Christmas and his transplant anniversary, emphasized his eternal thankfulness.

Celebrating his milestone birthday with friends, Max enjoyed a meal and his first legal pint. Transitioning to adult services at the Freeman Hospital, Max’s parents commend his resilience in overcoming life’s challenges. Keira’s parents, Joe and Loanna, made the courageous decision to donate her organs after a tragic accident, ultimately saving Max and three others.

Max’s journey, featured in a 2018 documentary, showcased the emotional moment of receiving Keira’s heart during the transplant. Reflecting on the impact of the new law, Max credits The Mirror for its role in raising awareness about organ donation.
