A resident of Greenland has issued a stark warning to the UK in support of Trump’s push for a US acquisition of the Danish territory, citing an imminent threat of internal conflict.
Jorgen Boassen, a 51-year-old bricklaying business owner and self-proclaimed “revolutionary,” is among a small group advocating for US control over their homeland.
Boassen fervently promotes the “Make Greenland American” movement, despite personal repercussions such as strain in his family relationships.
While the US President argues that the transfer would enhance security and be straightforward for his country, he faces strong opposition. Greenland’s resolute Prime Minister has condemned the US leader for his aggressive tactics.
With a population of under 60,000, Greenland is a self-governing territory under Denmark’s rule, holding strategic significance for NATO and the EU. However, internal tensions are nearing a breaking point. Boassen reveals that his pro-US advocacy has alienated his in-laws and allegedly led to his partner’s dismissal from a long-standing position at Air Greenland, a Danish airline, shortly after he participated in pro-Trump events in Washington.
Boassen describes a pervasive atmosphere of fear, with families torn apart and conflicts erupting in local establishments. He laments the economic repercussions, stating, “My bricklaying business has shut down due to boycotts, and similar fates await other pro-Trump enterprises. I remain in Copenhagen as associating with me back home is deemed risky. This fear permeates Greenland, silencing those who secretly support US intervention.”
Expressing concerns of a potential civil war in Greenland due to escalating tensions, Boassen emphasizes the dominance of Danish businesses in the region, accusing them of suppressing independent aspirations to collaborate with America.
Highlighting the abundance of weaponry in households, he warns of potential violence, asserting, “Nearly every household possesses hunting firearms.” He directs a cautionary message to the PM, stating, “To the EU and the UK, including Sir Keir Starmer, exercise caution before intervening and understand Denmark’s oppressive actions against our people.”
Although Denmark and Greenland maintain the island is not up for sale, the dispute has strained US-Europe relations, with Denmark’s prime minister cautioning that a US acquisition could jeopardize NATO.
During a recent conversation with Donald Trump, Sir Keir Starmer expressed his stance on Greenland, reiterating that the territory’s fate should be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark, as reiterated in a parliamentary session earlier that day.
