In a disturbing incident captured on video, two defenseless dogs were seen being pulled behind a car while concerned bystanders notified the authorities. The dogs, a German Shepherd named Marzipan and a pit bull named Nougat, were tethered to a red Volkswagen Passat and struggled to keep pace as the vehicle moved along the road. An onlooker, shocked by the scene, exclaimed about the cruelty towards the dogs.
Nougat managed to break free from the restraints, and the driver then loaded both dogs into the car before fleeing the scene. Witnesses in Long Island City alerted the New York Police Department (NYPD) after identifying the driver as Dan Bujor, 68. Following the incident, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Bujor was charged with animal cruelty offenses.
Katz commended the individuals who reported the incident and the swift action taken by the NYPD in apprehending the defendant and rescuing the animals. The dogs, now under the care of the ASPCA, are undergoing medical treatment.
Bujor, a resident of Long Island City, faces charges including overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals, failure to provide sustenance, and driving without a license. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a year in jail. The dogs, Marzipan and Nougat, were examined at the ASPCA in Manhattan, where they were found to have various injuries.
Howard Lawrence, ASPCA Vice President of Humane Law Enforcement, expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the ongoing issue of animal abuse in New York City. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of organizations involved in caring for the animals and prosecuting the case.
The ASPCA continues to provide care for the dogs and other animals in need, with support from various entities.
