Filmmaker Ally Pankiw Rejects “Harry Potter” TV Series

Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw announced on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming television series based on the popular “Harry Potter” franchise, citing her refusal to support transphobia.

Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on her Instagram, where she unequivocally rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO “Harry Potter” TV series, stating, “Absolutely f–king not!” She emphasized in her post that it was an easy decision to reject funding that promotes transphobia.

The 39-year-old director, known for her work on projects like “Black Mirror” and “Feel Good,” as well as the film “I Used to be Funny,” expressed her stance against associating with content that goes against her values.

The series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled to debut on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, and will be available for streaming on Crave in Canada. The show, based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic book series, has sparked controversy due to the author’s contentious views on transgender issues.

Rowling’s public statements on gender and sex have divided opinions, with some criticizing her for promoting discriminatory beliefs. The rift extends to various aspects of the “Harry Potter” franchise, with actors and filmmakers, like Pankiw and director Kate Herron, declining involvement in projects associated with Rowling.

Herron, known for her work on “Loki” and other popular series, also revealed that she turned down offers to work on the “Harry Potter” TV series. Both Pankiw and Herron have received support for their decisions to stand against content that aligns with Rowling’s controversial views.

As of now, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, has not responded to inquiries regarding the impact of such refusals on the production of the “Harry Potter” series. Requests for additional comments from Pankiw’s representatives remain unanswered.

The ongoing discord surrounding Rowling’s viewpoints continues to influence the reception and involvement in projects related to the beloved fantasy franchise.
