“Principal Seeks Answers After Hyundai Car Fire Tragedy”

Three months following a distressing car fire incident, Jason Pelletier remains in limbo seeking answers and potential compensation from Hyundai. On a regular workday morning on June 9, the school principal was driving his Santa Fe in Toronto’s north end when the vehicle suddenly burst into flames. Faced with smoke and flames emanating from the hood, Pelletier struggled to navigate the busy highway as the car’s controls failed. After a harrowing escape from the vehicle, an explosion ensued moments later.

Notably, Pelletier had visited the dealership the day prior for a critical repair involving a head gasket. Despite noticing a burning odor post-service, he was reassured by the service manager that it was residual. Subsequently, he observed light smoke from the hood and reached out to the manager for advice but received no response before the car ignited.

Hyundai Canada, emphasizing safety as its paramount concern, declined an interview request but acknowledged the ongoing review of the incident. A joint investigation is underway by Hycay Consulting Engineering and the insurance company to determine the fire’s cause.

Statistics reveal that vehicle fires are a significant concern in Canada, with Transport Canada receiving 1,140 incident reports between 2016 and 2026. Of these, Hyundai accounted for approximately 15%, ranking second after Ford. Notably, a past investigation highlighted engine issues in Hyundai and Kia vehicles, emphasizing the importance of addressing recurring problems promptly.

Although Pelletier’s insurer compensated him for the vehicle’s value and rental costs, he estimates losing over $5,000 in personal belongings, including important items for his alter ego. Expressing frustration over the prolonged investigation, he remains hopeful for a resolution and has opted for a different car brand following the ordeal.

Transport Canada continues its vigilance, investigating components of Hyundai vehicles for safety concerns. The ministry underscores the complexity of determining fire origins due to multiple factors at play, including maintenance lapses and manufacturing defects.

Pelletier’s quest for closure continues as he navigates the aftermath of the car fire, emphasizing the need for accountability and safety in the automotive industry.
